5dots (in brief)

  1. Best of 2009, addendum

I’ve never actually done a list like this before, but I was writing the introduction for my best of 2010 list, and thought for a second about the part where I say that I haven’t listened to every record from a year in that year. And I thought: why not go back, a year later, and see if there’s anything I’ve listened to that I would have added to last year’s list if I’d heard it last year?

In other words: here are two records that came out in 2009 which I enjoyed listening to in 2010.

Sonny & The Sunsets - Tomorrow is Alright

This album has a really casual sound to it - a little lo-fi; really relaxed. It sort of distantly reminds me of Elephant 6 stuff. Listen to “Too Young to Burn” and tell me that’s not a fantastic song.

    La Roux - La Roux

At first listen, this sounds like some glib electro dance pop. And that’s sort of true, yes, and so it’s an unlikely thing for me to consider best of the year. But this record is a lot less glib than it initially sounds, and the aesthetic really resonates with me. A lot of people I know have really fallen for Robyn this year, but I just can’t get into her - this record sounds like what I want Robyn to sound like. (Though I will readily admit that the instrumental for Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” is totally killer.)
